Much to our surprise and disappointment, our custom avatar partner, Ready Player Me, is shutting down on January 31, 2026. They’ve been acquired by Netflix and Netflix apparently does not want to continue to host the avatar creation and downloading service.
Rest assured however, that all of your existing custom avatars that you have downloaded from Ready Player Me into a Movie Maker 3D project will continue to work as before.
If you have any custom avatars on the readyplayer.me site, you should download those before the 31st into either a Movie Maker 3D project (or if you’re proficient with .glb files, you can save them to a file folder on your device).
What is going to change with the shutdown is that you won’t be able to Customize any of your existing avatars or create new custom avatars via the built-in Ready Player Me avatar editor since the editor is hosted on the readyplayer.me site which is shutting down.
If you’d like to create your own custom avatars, we can recommend Vroid Studio for custom anime-style characters. Here is a blog post we wrote with more info on this: https://moviemaker3d.com/blog/2024/9/13/anime
Again, our apologies for this disappointing loss of features in Movie Maker 3D. We’re looking for alternatives and will let you know when we find a new avatar partner. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
